One of the biggest costs of cloning a software platform such as facebook is the database storage needs. According to
this blog post at highscalability Google is in fact cheaper than Amazon to host web apps and platforms.
True Google does not have application clustering support, obviously this will lead to some groups using Amazon for application clustering and Google for data storage.
